"Okay," the Muse said, "this is not meant as criticism..."

"Uh-oh," I said. "That's never a good way to start off a sentence."

"You have an amazing ability to accept change and evolution in all things, except the people around you. Any change in them or the way they think or behave, and you lose your shit."

"I do not."

"Yes, you really do."

I stopped and looked at her a moment. "I do?"

She nodded. "Yes."

"Shit," I said.

She nodded again. "Yes. Shit."

"I hate this," I said.

"You hate change."

"Yep. Change is bad."

"It's inevitable," she said.

"Still sucks."

"Want a hug?" she asked.

I nodded. "About a hundred times a day."

The Muse put her arms around me, and we stayed that way a very long time.
